Intermediary #1
The first issue of Intermediary considered failed utopias and handicraft; compiling the work and writing of 15 early-to-mid career crafts people, artists, designers, writers and hobbyists. Contributors to the publication were asked to consider craft movements of the past, and interrogate how the political and material concerns manifest in contemporary practice.
Craft emerges from the poems, prose, artwork and interviews contained in Intermediary’s first issue, as a discipline fragmented by time, economic demands and the ongoing impact of colonialism. And yet, in this undefined form, craft retains its cultural value while also taking on a renewed, transformative potential.
Intermediary acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people as the traditional custodians of the lands and waterways in the area on which we live, work and have curated this project, and we sincerely pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging—and extend that respect to all First Nations people and communities. Sovereignty has never been ceded.
