WS117 Monday by Wanling Chang

18,00

In the summer of 2017, Wanling Chang travelled to Thailand with her partner during the national mourning period following the death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) in October 2016. Memorials to the late king — and to King Rama X and Queen Sirikit — appeared everywhere: in front of schools, train stations, temples. Monday brings together images and archives collected during that trip. It questions the gaze of a foreigner visiting a place in mourning: how can one observe while holding back speculation and assumptions? By intertwining these public rituals with intimate personal memories, distance becomes a space for reflection rather than explanation.
